Bella Render is a spectral rendering system for creating images of designs, materials and spaces. Bella for Rhino connects that rendering technology to Rhino 3D, allowing designers to develop their geometry, cameras and material choices in a familiar modelling environment. Ready to buy? Its distinguishing feature is the way it calculates light. Rather than working only with three primary colour channels, Bella performs light-transport calculations across spectral energy bands before converting the result to the output colour space. This provides a foundation for representing wavelength-dependent optical behaviour in materials and lighting.
Explore Spectral Light and Material Behaviour
Spectral rendering supports calculations involving dispersion, wavelength-dependent reflectance and related optical effects. These matter particularly when the appearance of a design depends on how light passes through a transparent material, reflects from a metal or interacts with a layered finish.
For presentation work, this gives designers tools to explore more than a surface colour. The relationship between illumination, surface structure and the material beneath it becomes part of how the object reads in the image. Individual effect support depends on the selected solver.
Develop Metals, Transparent Materials and Layers
Bella’s material system includes conductor and dielectric substrates. These provide the basis for opaque metallic and transparent material behaviours, with additional layers used to describe coatings and more complex surface structures.
Layers can include scattering, allowing light to interact with the coating and the substrate beneath it. This is useful when the intended appearance comes from a finish over a base material rather than a single uniform surface. The developer also provides examples of subsurface scattering for materials whose appearance depends on light travelling within them.
Work With PBR Textures and Detailed Material Controls
The Bella PBR material provides a straightforward route for using PBR texture sets, while the Uber material exposes more detailed controls. These approaches accommodate both efficient material setup and more deliberate development of a particular finish.
A texture set supplies surface information, but the final appearance also depends on the geometry, scale, lighting and camera. Reviewing a representative area of the model helps establish those relationships before committing to the full presentation.
Keep the Rendering Workflow Close to Rhino
Bella for Rhino translates native Rhino render settings, materials and environments, providing a starting point from the scene already prepared in Rhino. Rendering is available in the viewport, through the Rhino render buffer or externally in the Bella GUI.
The external GUI offers a useful separation between modelling and rendering: the scene can be rendered there while Rhino remains available for further work. The Rhino plugin installer includes a local copy of the Bella GUI, bringing both routes into the same installation.
Shape the Presentation Through Lighting and Cameras
Rhino cameras and environments form part of the integrated workflow, while Bella’s lighting and material tools support further development of the image. The developer documents a Live Lights feature for adjusting lights while rendering, helping refine the balance of a scene through direct feedback.
For a product, lighting can communicate curvature, edge treatment and surface finish. For an architectural space, it can establish depth, atmosphere and the relationship between materials. Start with the visual qualities the image needs to explain, then develop the lighting around them.
Choose a Solver Around the Scene
Bella’s documentation distinguishes between solver capabilities. Support for features such as layers, volumetric materials, optical effects and additional image passes varies between solvers, so the choice should follow the scene’s requirements.
A representative evaluation is especially valuable for transparent, layered or scattering materials. It lets you assess the effects you need, the workflow on your system and the quality of the resulting image together.
