MoI3D, Moment of Inspiration, is a standalone NURBS modeller for designers and artists who want to construct accurate shapes through a direct, curve-led workflow. Profile curves, surface construction and Boolean operations provide a practical approach to developing products, hard-surface forms and presentation models. Ready to buy? See the MoI3D licences.

MoI3D complements Rhino 3D rather than running as a Rhino plugin. Its native 3DM exchange provides a route between the applications, while its polygon-mesh export tools support moving CAD-style geometry into rendering and other digital-content workflows.

Develop Forms From Profile Curves

A typical MoI workflow starts with the outline curves that define a shape. Extrude creates forms from a profile, Revolve develops rotational geometry, and Loft and Sweep construct surfaces from related curves. A reference bitmap can also be placed in the scene to guide the drawing process.

This approach is useful when a design is easiest to describe through silhouettes, sections and paths. A product enclosure can begin with a clear outline, while a handle or flowing component can be developed through profiles that describe how its shape changes.

Combine and Cut Geometry With Booleans

Boolean operations bring the initial pieces together. Union combines objects, Difference subtracts cutting geometry, and related operations help develop the intersections that define the finished form.

MoI can use solids, surfaces and profile curves in cutting operations. This allows a designer to move between two-dimensional outlines and three-dimensional forms as the model develops, using a curve to establish a cut or a solid to define a recess, opening or intersecting feature.

Refine Edges and Transitions

Fillet rounds sharp corners, with the selection determining how the operation is applied. Selecting a solid addresses its edges, selecting individual edges targets particular transitions, and selecting faces applies rounding to their boundaries.

The command also supports curve fillets and surface-to-surface fillets. These options let rounding form part of both the initial profile construction and the later refinement of a surface or solid model.

Keep Curves and Surfaces for CAD Exchange

MoI exports curves and surfaces through 3DM, IGES, STEP and SAT. These formats retain a curve-and-surface representation, making them appropriate when the receiving workflow needs CAD geometry for further modelling or downstream preparation.

For a Rhino user, 3DM provides a useful connection between MoI’s focused modelling environment and a wider Rhino project. The exchange can carry the geometric work forward while leaving the choice of modelling environment open at different stages of a design.

Control Polygon Output for Presentation

MoI’s mesh exporter converts NURBS surfaces into polygons, with controls that balance surface detail against mesh density. Supported output includes n-gons, quads and triangles, or triangles only, allowing the export to be tailored to the receiving application.

This is particularly useful when a model begins as precise CAD geometry but needs to become a mesh for rendering or another digital-content workflow. Formats include OBJ, FBX and STL, alongside additional mesh formats documented by the developer. The right polygon structure depends on how the destination application handles the mesh.

Prepare Meshes for 3D Printing

STL export provides a route into 3D-printing preparation. The export resolution determines how closely the polygon mesh approximates the original surfaces, so the physical size of the object and the detail required should guide that choice.

A denser mesh can represent curved areas more smoothly, while a lighter mesh can be easier to handle. Review the exported object in the intended preparation software, including its dimensions and suitability for the chosen production process.
