Licence Registration Method
All three options use the same licence key — this is simply a personal choice of how you register it with McNeel after purchase. You can switch between methods at any time, free of charge.
☁️ Cloud Zoo Most Popular
Use your licence on any machine you sign into. Register your key with your free Rhino Account — no machine lock-in, works on Windows and Mac.
Best for: Working across multiple machines, remote working, and teams sharing licences.
Works offline for extended periods — Rhino reminds you to reconnect well before it is required. Free to set up, no server needed.
Academic single-user licences cannot be shared with other users via Cloud Zoo.
🖥️ Single Computer
Lock your licence to one specific workstation. No internet required after activation — fully offline every time.
Best for: A fixed workstation, air-gapped environments (defence, government, R&D), or anyone who prefers no cloud dependency.
Moving to a new machine is simple — unregister from the old, re-register on the new. No need to contact McNeel or CADWAX.
🌐 LAN Zoo
Float licences across your office network using a free Zoo server on your LAN. Users check out a licence when they open Rhino and return it when they close it.
Best for: Engineering offices with shared workstations, university computer labs, and IT teams needing central licence control.
Requires a Windows PC on your network as the Zoo server. Off-site users need VPN. CADWAX offers full LAN Zoo setup support — contact us.
Academic single-user licences are not compatible with LAN Zoo. Commercial and Lab licences only.
Switching is always free. Simply unregister from your current method and re-register using whichever option suits you best. Your licence key stays the same.

Rhino 3D V8 Commercial is the latest iteration of the world's most versatile 3D modeller, designed for professionals who require absolute geometric precision. This perpetual licence offers a robust NURBS-based engine capable of creating, editing, and documenting complex freeform curves, surfaces, and solids.
Version 8 introduces transformative workflows, including the ShrinkWrap tool for creating watertight meshes for 3D printing and PushPull direct editing for intuitive solid modelling. With significantly enhanced performance for Mac users via Apple Metal technology and a revamped Cycles render engine, Rhino V8 provides a high-performance environment for architectural, industrial, and jewellery design. A one-time purchase — no recurring subscription fees.
Key Features
- ShrinkWrap — Create a watertight, valid closed mesh around open or closed NURBS, SubD, and point clouds — ideal for 3D printing and reverse engineering.
- PushPull Modelling — Dynamically add or remove volumes by grabbing and dragging faces, significantly accelerating solid modelling workflows.
- SubD Creases — Define sharp features within smooth SubD objects without increasing control net complexity, perfect for fillet-like details.
- Enhanced Mac Performance — Native support for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs using Apple Metal technology for hardware-accelerated 24x faster graphics.
- Advanced Clipping & Sectioning — Improved tools for generating 2D drawings, reflected ceiling plans, and fabrication sections directly from 3D models.
- Integrated Grasshopper — Leverage the industry-standard visual programming environment for generative design and complex task automation.
- Updated Render Engine — Faster Cycles-based raytraced display mode and improved UV mapping for high-fidelity real-time visualisations.
Use Cases
- Industrial Designers — Developing ergonomic consumer products with complex double-curved surfaces ready for CNC or injection moulding.
- Architects — Generating BIM-ready floor plans, 2D sections, and complex parametric facades using integrated Grasshopper workflows.
- Jewellery Designers — Crafting bespoke, intricate pieces with high-precision NURBS geometry for direct casting or 3D printing.
- Marine Architects — Modelling hydrodynamically efficient hulls and fairing surfaces with technical accuracy for naval engineering.
- Set & Prop Designers — Quickly prototyping digital assets for film and TV, utilising ShrinkWrap to clean up messy geometry for production.
Compatibility
- Windows — Windows 11 or 10
- Mac — macOS 14 (Sonoma), 13 (Ventura), or 12.4 (Monterey). Supports Intel and Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) natively.
- Plugin Dependencies — None (self-contained). Most V7 plugins are compatible; check with specific vendors for V8-ready versions.
- Your licence key works on both Windows and Mac (not simultaneously).
System Requirements
- Minimum — 64-bit Intel or AMD processor (Windows) / Apple Silicon or Intel (Mac), 8 GB RAM, 600 MB (Windows) / 5 GB (Mac) disk space, OpenGL 4.1 capable video card.
- Recommended — 16 GB RAM or more, NVIDIA or AMD graphics card with 4 GB+ VRAM (Windows), multiple-button mouse with scroll wheel.
FAQs
- Is this a perpetual licence? Yes. Rhino 3D V8 is a one-time purchase. The licence does not expire and there are no mandatory subscription fees.
- Can I use this on both Windows and Mac? Yes. Your licence key works on both platforms, though not simultaneously.
- What is the difference between Commercial and Academic licences? Functionally identical. The Academic licence is discounted for students and faculty but is non-transferable. This Commercial licence is fully transferable.
- Can I upgrade from an older version? Yes. Owners of any previous version (V1–V7) are eligible for the Rhino V8 Upgrade licence at a reduced price.
- Does Rhino V8 support 3D printing? Extensively. ShrinkWrap and CheckMesh commands ensure models are watertight and valid for STL/OBJ export.
