If you're studying at a UK university, college, or sixth form — architecture, product design, engineering, or any design discipline, Rhino 3D is likely on your course software list — and for good reason. It's one of the few professional CAD tools that still sells a perpetual student licence at a fraction of the commercial price, with no feature restrictions and no expiry date. This guide covers everything you need to know about getting Rhino as a student in the UK.

What Is the Rhino 3D Academic Licence?

The academic licence is a full, perpetual Rhino 8 licence — the same software used by professional studios, with no watermarks, no feature limits, and no time restrictions. You buy it once and own it permanently.

Key facts from McNeel's educational licensing page:

  • Same features as commercial — full NURBS modelling, SubD, Grasshopper, rendering, drafting, all file formats.
  • No expiry — the licence does not end when you graduate.
  • Commercial use permitted — you can use it for paid freelance work, client projects, or a side business. This is a significant difference from most educational software licences.
  • Non-transferable — the licence is registered to you and cannot be sold or transferred to another person.
  • Upgradable — you can upgrade to future versions at academic pricing while you're still a student, or at commercial pricing after you graduate.

The price for an individual academic licence is £150 ex VAT (£180 inc VAT). For comparison, the commercial licence is £790 ex VAT (£948 inc VAT) — the academic version saves you £640.

Who Qualifies for an Academic Licence?

CADWAX accepts the following as proof of student status. You qualify if you're a registered student at an accredited educational institution — this includes universities, further education (FE) colleges, sixth form colleges, art and design colleges, secondary schools, and accredited career schools.

To prove your status, you need documentation that includes your name and confirms current enrolment. Accepted forms:

  • Your student ID card with a valid expiry date — the card must be current (not expired)
  • Your tuition bill dated for the current term
  • Your transcript dated for the current term
  • Your current class schedule dated for the current term

The documentation just needs to be current — there is no 180-day restriction. A student ID card with a visible expiry date that has not yet passed is sufficient on its own.

Faculty and staff also qualify, using a current staff ID card with expiry date, course schedule, or pay stub.

What's Included with the Academic Licence?

Rhino 8 academic includes the complete software package:

  • Full Rhino 8 — NURBS modelling, SubD (subdivision surface modelling), meshes, drafting, and 2D documentation tools.
  • Grasshopper — the visual programming environment built into Rhino, used for parametric design, computational geometry, and automation. No separate installation needed.
  • Rendering — Cycles raytrace renderer, Raytraced viewport mode, and material editor. Included at no additional cost.
  • Both platforms — Windows and macOS. One licence covers both; install on whichever you use (or both via Cloud Zoo).
  • Service releases — bug fixes and minor updates for the life of Rhino 8 at no additional cost.
  • Legacy version access — your Rhino 8 key also unlocks Rhino 6 and Rhino 7, useful if a plugin you need hasn't been updated for Rhino 8 yet.
  • Rhino 9 beta access — all Rhino 8 licence holders can download and test Rhino 9 beta builds at no additional cost during the beta period.

How Licensing and Activation Works

Once you receive your licence key, you choose how to activate Rhino:

  • Cloud Zoo — log in with your Rhino Account and use Rhino on any computer. Works offline after an initial connection. Best for students using multiple machines (desktop at home, laptop on campus).
  • Single-Computer — enter the key directly on one machine. No internet needed after setup. Best for a dedicated workstation.

You can switch between these methods at any time without repurchasing. For step-by-step activation instructions, see our licensing guide.

Plug-ins and Academic Pricing

Several Rhino plugins also offer academic licences at reduced prices. These are the ones available through CADWAX:

  • VisualARQ 3 (Academic) — £95 ex VAT. BIM tools for Rhino: parametric objects, IFC export, documentation.
  • LandsDesign V6 (Academic) — £95 ex VAT. Landscape BIM: terrain modelling, plant database, irrigation design.
  • Bongo V2 (Academic) — £164 ex VAT. Keyframe animation for Rhino models.
  • MoI3D V4 (Academic) — £65 ex VAT. NURBS modeller with a touch-friendly interface.

Bundled options that include Rhino + a plugin:

  • RhinoARQ (Academic) — £230 ex VAT. Rhino + VisualARQ bundle.
  • RhinoLands (Academic) — £230 ex VAT. Rhino + LandsDesign bundle.

Each plugin requires a Rhino licence to run. Bundles include both in one purchase — useful if you're starting from scratch and know you need a specific plugin.

Getting Rhino Through Your University or College

Many UK universities and colleges provide Rhino through lab licences or 30-licence education packs. If your institution participates in the Educational License Pack programme, you may be able to get a permanent individual licence at a significantly lower cost — or included in your course fees.

Universities and colleges can purchase 30 individual student licences for £2,250 ex VAT, which works out to £75 per student — half the individual academic price. If your course requires Rhino, it's worth asking your department whether they offer this. See our guide for universities for how the programme works.

If your university or college doesn't offer this, you can buy an individual academic licence directly from us with your proof of student status.

What Happens After Graduation?

Your academic licence does not expire when you graduate. You keep the software with full commercial use rights — it remains permanently licensed to you.

When the next major version of Rhino is released (for example, Rhino 9 when it ships), you have two options:

  • Stay on your current version — Rhino 8 continues working forever. You just don't get the new version's features.
  • Upgrade at commercial pricing — purchase a commercial upgrade licence to move to Rhino 9. Your licence then converts from academic to commercial, and becomes transferable (you can resell it if you wish).

If you stay in education (postgraduate study, teaching role), you can continue upgrading at academic pricing as long as you qualify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my academic licence for freelance work? Yes. McNeel explicitly permits commercial use with academic licences. You can take on paid client projects, run a design business, or use it for any commercial activity.

Does the licence expire? No. It's perpetual — you own it permanently, including after graduation.

Can I install it on both my desktop and laptop? Yes, via Cloud Zoo. Log in with your Rhino Account on any computer where Rhino is installed.

Is Rhino available for Mac? Yes. Your licence covers both Windows and macOS.

Can I use third-party plugins? Yes, academic licences have no plugin restrictions. Academic-priced plugins are available for many popular tools.

Do you accept student ID cards? Yes — CADWAX accepts student ID cards that show a valid (unexpired) expiry date. The card just needs to be current. We also accept tuition bills, transcripts, and class schedules dated for the current term.

Can I sell my licence when I graduate? Not while it's an academic licence — it's non-transferable. However, if you upgrade to the next version at commercial pricing, the licence converts to commercial and becomes transferable.
