Here's a practical answer, plus where a dedicated renderer like Bella Render earns its place alongside it.

What Cycles actually gives you for studio shots

Cycles has powered Rhino's Raytraced viewport and the Render command since Rhino 7, and it's included with every Rhino licence at no extra cost. For studio product work specifically, the relevant tools are:

  • Rectangular Light — Rhino's area light type, the direct equivalent of a soft-box. Size and distance from the subject control how soft or hard the resulting shadow edge is, the same relationship as in physical studio lighting.
  • Ground Plane — in Render Properties, this catches contact shadows without you needing to model a literal floor. The Shadow Intensity setting controls how dark that contact shadow reads, which is the main control for getting a believable grounded look under a product.
  • Environments panel — lets you assign separate textures for Background, Skylight, and Reflections independently. For a clean studio look, this means you can keep the Background a flat colour or gradient while still using an HDRI purely for Skylight fill and Reflections, rather than one setting forcing all three to match.
  • PBR materials — Rhino's physically-based material system responds correctly to the lighting above, so reflective and semi-gloss product surfaces (plastics, coated metals, ceramics) read accurately without manual tuning per light.
  • Raytraced viewport — gives you a live, interactive preview while you adjust light size, position, and Ground Plane shadow intensity, rather than waiting on a full render for every test.

In Render Settings, sample count and maximum light bounces are the two settings that most affect shadow quality — soft shadows from a large Rectangular Light typically need a higher sample count to resolve cleanly without visible noise, which is the main practical trade-off compared to a hard-edged spotlight setup.

Where it gets harder

The ingredients are genuinely there — this isn't a case of Cycles lacking the tools. The friction most people hit is tuning time: getting a soft, even, low-noise shadow at a plain white background typically means iterating on Rectangular Light size and sample count several times, and each iteration at production resolution takes render time to check. For a one-off hero shot that's manageable. For a catalogue of dozens of products needing a consistent look, it adds up.

When Bella Render is worth adding

A practical workflow for a product catalogue: block out lighting and composition using Cycles' Raytraced viewport for fast, interactive feedback, then switch the current renderer to Bella for the final production pass once the setup is confirmed — since your Rectangular Lights, Ground Plane, and Environments settings carry across automatically.

Which one for your workflow

Cycles alone is a reasonable choice if: you need occasional product shots, you're comfortable iterating on sample counts for clean soft shadows, and your materials are mostly simple plastics, paints, or matte finishes.

Bella Render is worth adding if: you're producing a consistent catalogue of client-facing product images, your materials include glass, coated metal, or gemstones where accurate light interaction matters, or render time spent re-tuning shadows is costing you more than the plugin would.
